Cleft lip surgery is usually performed on a baby when it is about three months old, although, they often require multiple surgeries up until they are about 18 years old. The first surgery is done to construct a functional palate to reduce the chances of fluid developing in the middle ears, and helps for the future development the facial bones and teeth. These surgeries will ultimately improve a childs’ ability to eat, hear, speak and breathe, and will also give them a more normal facial structure.
